In order to safeguard the objects in a collection from damage during a natural disaster, the building which houses the collection must be evaluated to see what threats it poses and what types of threats it is vulnerable to due to its location or design. With that knowledge and the knowledge of which objects have rigid response systems to stress and which have flexible responses, protective mounts and restraints can be designed for each object. The author lists and illustrates various means of securing, padding, and restraining objects in storage areas, discusses the use of teflon pads on the bottoms of pedestals to promote sliding rather than rocking during seismic events, describes means of preventing flexible objects such as paintings from oscillating, and illustrates a simple shock-absorbing isolator for small objects that was developed by mountmakers at the Getty Museum.
