Abstract
The red ink on four fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls was analyzed by x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction. The red pigment was identified as mercury sulfide (HgS), or cinnabar. The significant archaeological and historical aspects of this finding are discussed.
