An engineer and an archaeologist combine to show how the study of mechanics can help create a better understanding of the functions of artifacts and the achievements of early technology. The work spans the period from the Lower Palaeolithic to the erection of the Easter Island statues in postmedieval times. Chapters consider basic mechanics, fluids and solids, machines (levers, pulleys, etc), structures, stone tools, projectiles, land transport, water transport, musical instruments; the epilogue explains that the lack of consideration of mechanics has allowed frauds and lunatics to claim that extraterrestrials and supernatural forces shaped human history. This study aims to provide the understanding to refute such claims. -- AATA
