The condition of the encaustic icon Two Unknown Martyrs is described. Using x-ray, optical and chemical analysis, the original painting was identified and the artist's technique examined. Restoration involved the removal of surface dirt, varnish, and underand overpaintings.This icon was compared with the icon St. Sergius and Bacchus. See 18-428. -- AATA
