From the samples of late antique and early medieval Central Asian wall paintings (Karatepe, 2nd-4th century; Toprak-kala, 3rd century; Pendjikent, 7th-8th century; and Adjinatepe, 7th century) polymeric organic substances were isolated. Their IR-specta resembled the IR-spectra of Prunoideae tree gum polysaccharides. The investigation of their hydrolysates by thin layer and gas-liquid chromatography showed that in Kara-tepe and Pendjikent, the gums of similar unidentified trees were employed, in Toprak-kala cherry or apricot-tree gum, and in Adjina-tepe the tree gum was unidentified. On the basis of this data it was concluded that the paints of all of the investigated fragments were prepared with the addition of tree gum. -- AATA
