The procedures followed for the conservation and restoration of metal objects in the collection of The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum are outlined. Conservation of metal objects begins withaccession and continues with regular condition surveys of the collection. Research into environmental controls, safe exhibition practices, care in handling, and storage and maintenance practices is carried out by the staff. The restoration equipment and methods such as the air abrasive unit, electrolytic reduction, use of acids, removal of sulfides or oxides and brush plating are cited. Problems such as the replacement of missing parts, the removal of dents and the restoration of misshapen objects are discussed. Metal objects need tender loving care and should be treated by a professional conservator.
