Abstract
Specimens of Cu/5-30Zn, Ce/0.5-6.0A1 and Cu/2-25Ni were annealed at 500C for 1h, air cooled and immersed in a solution of 8g Cu dust in 11 of 15N ammonia for 2 days at rt. The tarnish film and metal-film interface were examined by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and XRD. Microprobe analysis was also performed on Cu/ 30ZN filings exposed to the tarnishing solution for 72h. The appearance of the tarnish film and the concentration of alloying element and Cu at various positions in the material are discussed. The formation of an outer layer of CuO in specimens exposed for long periods is described. -- AATA
