The church was probably erected about 1200 and has been subjected to later alterations. The article describes in detail the medieval wall paintings found during the restoration. Of the original decoration, 7 crosses were found, inscribed in circles incised with a compass into the wet mortar, and painted in (iron oxide?) red with a tempera added to the lime medium. The second decoration, probably from about 1300, comprises extensive figural and ornamental motives. Preliminary sketches in red, occasionally also incisions, are observed. The paintings were executed in simple, single-layer colors with black outlines (some facial features in red). More complex techniques are to be found in the blue areas, with alternating underpaint layers in grey, red, and black. Pig ments: azurite, verdigris (?), iron oxide red, vermilion, red lead, charcoal black, and lime. Medium: lime. The conservation was done with limecasein, and with a PVA emulsion added in a test area. -- AATA
