The apparent Wealden house conceals an earlier structure, an aisled hall-house of ca. mid-13th century whose front was rebuilt two centuries later in jettied construction. The two meter-long scarf joints probably date to the 13th century. An upper floor was inserted early in the 17th century when the chimney was added, and the buttery and pantry doors were plastered over in the 20th century.
