Abstract
Phase I of the Qatar Museum project involved repair and restoration of the Old Amiri Palace. Traditional <i>juss</i> has been used in many facets of rebuilding, but reinforced concrete has been used on the crow-stepped battlements of the three baits and on the parapets. Environmental conditions, heat, salinity, and humidity, have been extremely detrimental to the concrete. Traditional ventilation systems built into the original architectural design have not been employed in anticipation of modern cooling systems, which ultimately were vetoed in order to maintain authentic ambience. Interior work and traditional ceilings have been recreated. Although not completely authentic in traditional methods, this project presents an image of traditional architecture.
