Abstract
The interactions of stone surfaces with a corrosive atmosphere can be followed by labeling stone samples with radioactive Krypton 85 in a low energy plasma beam. The decrease of radioactivity is related to the corrosion speed and measures the durability of stone in that atmosphere. It can be applied to evaluate differences between treated and untreated samples and among diverse treatments. The corrosion resistance of three basic types of Japanese tuff in an atmosphere with a high content of sulfur and nitrogen oxides is studied. The results show clearly that the examined types of tuff corrode easily and that the speed of corrosion depends on pollutant concentration, relative humidity, and pore structure. It was found that treatments with acrylic copolymers were more efficient in preserving the tuff than treatments with siloxanes.
