Abstract
Curators may find themselves in something of a dilemma when new scientific techniques offer the opportunity of deeper examination of materials in collections: but it is argued that where ceramics have adherent residues it may be worth sampling them for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating, either to refine broad chronologies or to date otherwise undatable material.
