Several hundred ancient marble heads from a collection at the Antiquarium in Munich were preserved. The carbon-13 and oxygen-18 isotopes from 74 objects were analyzed to determine the provenance of the marble. On the basis of existing isotope data, most of the heads could be connected with marble deposits in Greece and western Turkey. The manufacture of a series of Carrara marble heads was dated to the Renaissance.
