The technique for the removal of old repairs and adhesive deposits is extended to include cases in which the inks are fugitive in aqueous solutions. The stability of various inks in a number of solvent systems is assessed. The activity of alpha-amylase and protease in a range of mixtures of water and various organic solvents is investigated, 2-methoxyethanol and isopropanol at a concentration of 45% being shown to offer reasonable activity for repair work. Examples of these enzymes in the above solvent mixtures acting on actual library materials, both manuscript and printed are presented.
