Thermoluminescense as a method of dating archaeological materials has held great promise of providing chronological information complementary to radiocarbon dating because it can be applied to heated, inorganic artifacts. Presented are the basic principles of the method and the methodological details of the dating techniques: inclusion, fine-grain, and pre-dose techniques. For each technique, the sample preparation, measurement procedures, data analysis, age calculation, and sources of error are explained. TL dating by subtraction and by zircon techniques is mentioned. Applications of the dating techniques to archaeological problems are presented. See also AATA 4-3668.
