Giving priority to the care and preservation of art collections will require better communication with museum administrators and education of the public. Conservators can learn much from nature conservationists in launching such a campaign. Because much of collection maintenance consists of repetitive, unending housework, funding to support such unglamorous activities is minimal in most museum budgets. Few laymen realize that the greatest hazards to museum objects are neglect, poor climate control and pollution. It requires a trained conservator to recognize the nature of the deterioration of works of art and to apply the proper treatment.
