In contrast to Prince Charles' opinion, the author argues that harmony and keeping-in-between old and new building has never been an overriding rule in architecture. In other periods of history, contrast was valued for its own sake, and some of our most treasured buildings and ensembles were created according to that premise, e.g., medieval castles and cathedrals with Renaissance, Baroque, or 19th-century extensions or restorations.
