Abstract
Critical appraisal of the new Haas-Haus shopping center designed by Hans Hollein in order to fill the gap due to the destruction in 1945 of the earlier 19th-century Haas-Haus. Situated on a key corner of Vienna, in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral, this modern, highly idiosyncratic, building has been the source of much controversy.
