Abstract
Criticism of the project for the extension of the Sainsbury Wing National Gallery in London, designed by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown: devices like the front elevation where an extension of W. Wilkins 'main building (first half of 19th century) gradually fades away into a blank stone facade, have been promoted by the architects and their supporters as appropriate and respectful ways of causing a contemporary building to mesh with the existing city.
