The staff of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco developed a mounting system to solve conservation, travel, and exhibition problems of over 100 large fragile pre-19th-century flatweaves. Their technical description is briefly given; the experimentation and treatment steps are detailed. Of particular interest is the adoption of an elaborate, labor-intensive but effective way of leaving excess fabric in the linen backing, here called bag, used for lining the rugs. Large, easily removed stitches, using strong colored cotton were found to be safe. Deciding on linen border proportions, attaching cotton tape and Velcro, and making a final cover for the flatweave when in storage or traveling are the steps described prior to the explanation of the aluminum channel hanging system. Installation and deinstallation are simple. Products used and suppliers' names are provided.
