Discusses the collaborative decision-making processes used in determining an ethical treatment plan for six Oriental rugs from a noted collection held at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Old, unsightly repairs were deemed potentially damaging to the structure of these valuable pieces. A professional rug restorer employed a combination of techniques detailed and illustrated with before and after photographs for four of the rugs. Headings are as follows: selective reknotting on original warp; low pile knotting technique; support patch and knotted patch insert techniques; and reweave insert and selective old repair removal techniques. Reweaving and reknotting were found best suited to these textiles when selectively applied, and visual improvement remained within the limits of conservation ethics.
