Abstract
Presents the use of scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) to characterize the composition of glazes found on a collection of blue glazed, white quartzite sculptures from the mid second millennium BC, excavated between 1913 and 1916 by the Harvard University-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition site of Kerma, the capital of ancient Kush (Sudan). The authors compare the compositions of the glazes from the quartzite objects with glazes on locally produced faience. The scientific analysis of the artefacts shows the experimental nature of this extremely rare manufacture appears to have developed from faience technology. -- ICCROM
