Abstract
Presents the test results obtained from eight synthesised mortars used in restoration treatments on historic masonry. Traditional materials were used in the mortar formulations, specifically aerial lime and artificial pozzolanic additives. After ageing, the mortars were tested for properties related to chemical and mechanical stabilization using ultrasonic velocity propagation and dynamic modulus of elasticity (Ed), mercury intrusion porosimetry, water capillary rise, and conventional mechanical testing to determine the flexural and compressive strength (Fc). Performance is correlated to the chemical composition of the mortars, their microstructural and mechanical characteristics. A correlation between the compressive strength and average pore radius for all mortars was detected, in addition to a correlation between modulus of elasticity and average pore radius for lime mortars. -- ICCROM
