Abstract
Presents an overview of the applications using electrochemical methods for treatment and research in the conservation of metal artefacts. As treatment techniques, chemical methods have been used for cleaning, stabilization and consolidation for many years. Presently electrochemical methods are increasingly being used as a research tool, allowing the identification and quantification of products present on the surface of artefacts and in evaluating compatibility between materials. The principle advantage in using an electrochemical methodology is the preservation of the base metal against loss. The high selectivity of the potentiostatic technique permits full control of the reactions occurring on the surface of the metal. The author presents examples using silver-copper alloys and stainless steel. -- ICCROM
