Abstract
Presents a multi-disciplinary approach using chemical and micro-structural characterization to aid in the technical interpretation, evaluation and treatment of a Della Robbia ceramic altarpiece. The majolica altar was manufactured by Andrea della Robbia in 1490 and has been preserved at Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, in the province of Perugia, Italy. This study identifies the glaze and pigments used by the artist and presents information useful in establishing the treatment guidelines. Using SEM-EDS and FT-IR analysis it was seen that Della Robbia increased tin oxide content in lead glazes rendering greater opacity to the glaze and a greater brightness to the white surfaces. -- ICCROM
