Abstract
This paper discusses the analyses made on samples of historic iron wire from a cable used in one of four post-tensioned cast-iron girders removed from a nineteenth-century structure in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The authors compare the wire cable from a so-called Gried-Gendell girder, measuring 9 meters long and supporting two floors in the rear of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank building in Philadelphia, with data from an earlier study on cable wires from the Wheeling Suspension Bridge in West Virginia constructed at about the same time as the Philadelphia structure. The article provides diagrams and indentation hardness tables as well as energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) x-ray analysis results for the various samples of iron cable. -- ICCROM
