Abstract
Moist wood finds have modified physical and chemical properties compared with freshly cut wood of the same kind. The water embedded in moist wood causes volume stability. Moist wood is preserved with polyethylene glycol (PEG) in a partly automatic wood preservation plant, where the water embedded in moist wood is exchanged for PEG. The process of preservation begins with the submersion of wood into a 10 percent aqueous solution of PEG at a temperature of about 50°C. The evaporating water of the solution is continuously replaced by a 10 percent PEG solution. Preservation is terminated if a 100 percent wax meltage of PEG is obtained in the container. It is possible to reuse the contaminated PEG after passing it through several filters. Since the PEG used for preservation is hygroscopic, special demands will have to be made on chambers where preserved moist wood is to be stored. Favorable storage conditions prevent the decomposition of preserved wood by microorganisms and fungi.
