Starting out from the functions of wood preserving, a survey of the basic ways of preserving museum objects by means of organic chemicals is given. The preserving agents used so far are discussed in groups and separately by their employment for dry or wet wood. The authors attempt to evaluate the individual groups of agents with regard to their stabilizing effect. Problems of cleaning, pre-preserving, removal of water, sticking and surface dressing during the preservation process are also considered.
