It was possible to harden sufficiently parts of an oak crossbeam of a medieval gun carriage by ₆₀ Co radiation treatment after previous impregnation with a mixture of methyl methacrylate and crotonaldehyde. The contribution gives a detailed description of the problems which occurred during the preservation and draws conclusions for further work in this field. See also AATA 19-381 for related study.
