Abstract
Nine proteinaceous materials were fumigated -- two types of silk fabric, wool cloth, 4 kinds of leather and 2 gelatin samples. Control duplicate samples were not fumigated. Amino acid analysis on the unaged samples showed no change above 1% of the total amino acid content. Changes due to fumigation are probably smaller than that. The method will be modified for better sensitivity in order to deduce chemical mechanisms for physical changes seen. Results of tests on unaged samples show some changes in color and surface texture of some samples. Vegetable-tanned leathers show the most change; hardly any change was seen in chrome-tanned leathers. Wool and silk broadcloth showed the most change, while the other silk samples showed almost no change. Photographic gelatin showed no change while animal hide glue demonstrated some differences. Tensile tests and light scattering measurements are incomplete. Solubility tests for the gelatins are proposed. Artificial aging will begin when tensile tests give enough results to indicate how long samples should be aged. A study has been commissioned to narrow the field of available dyes (see Appendix). After selection, dyed fabrics and pure dyestuffs will be fumigated. Spectrophotometric TLC, FTIR and fading tests will be performed.
