Abstract
The stated objective of this paper is to review the important characteristics of wood that influence the way in which coatings interact with it. The chemical composition of wood, its ultrastructure and anatomy, and its gross structural features are considered, as are the important properties of shrinkage and swelling, fluid flow in wood, and biological deterioration of wood. The weathering of wood and the interactions between wood and coating systems are also discussed. -- AATA
