The collection of the Dauphin's jewels at the Prado is one of the most characteristic examples of Renaissance and Baroque jewelry. This collection was part of the inheritance of Philip V at the death of his father, the Great Dauphin, the son of Louis XIV. There are 120 pieces of cut rock crystal and hard stones. Before the restoration of this collection, most of the pieces were fragile and unstable due to inadequate care during various moves, the aging of materials used at the time of previous restoration, and the theft and mutilation of several pieces in 1918. The present procedures of restoration are based on the strict preservation of the pieces, limiting intervention to methods that would not damage or modify the integrity of the objects.
