The saving of historically important town centers has become an urgent issue in Hungary. The building in question is a one-story burgher-house ornamented with fine Baroque windows. In the course of reconstruction, three modern flats replaced the earlier tenements. The large apartment upstairs was chosen to house a local club of artists. Special attention was paid to the insulation of the ground floor and walls. The cast iron rails of the romantic balcony upstairs were cleaned and completed. The frescoes from the end of the 18th century were found under a thick layer of plaster and illustrate how the bourgeois homes of the 19th century were decorated. The author argues for similar reconstructions where good design is accompanied by conscientious, high-quality construction. -- AATA
