Abstract
Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States, took steps to restore its old downtown to remain a viable economic community despite pressures from suburban malls. A long-range plan was devised, a revolving fund established, and new investment followed. Stripping and cleaning of the brick facades was the most visible activity in the renovation of the facades; sandblasting has been replaced with the use of an oil base paint remover that does not damage the brick. SERMAC evaluates the materials to be cleaned and recommends an appropriate product and application method.
