Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States, took steps to restore its old downtown to remain a viable economic community despite pressures from suburban malls. A long-range plan was devised, a revolving fund established, and new investment followed. Stripping and cleaning of the brick facades was the most visible activity in the renovation of the facades; sandblasting has been replaced with the use of an oil base paint remover that does not damage the brick.
