Abstract
The character of the preservation of an Oriental carpet depends on whether it is perceived primarily as an ornament or an historical record. Six carpet scholars, eight conservators, and four restorers were surveyed to compare their methods and priorities. The differences and similarities between the approaches of professional carpet restorers and conservators are discussed. Carpet conservation appears to be a newly developing subdiscipline of textile conservation. -- AATA
