Contrasting storage and display issues of ASEAN nations (Association of Southeast Asian Nations: Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam) with those of the United States may help to clarify the underlying impact that climate plays upon preservation strategies. By reviewing those types and conditions which have allowed textile collections in Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore to achieve antiquity, the textiles which have survived in North America and Europe may be characterized and grouped. The absolute climatic conditions external to the museum are seen to be important; the philosophical and social climate is crucial; the interaction of postproduction technology (cleaning and conservation) with these factors is decisive.
