Abstract
Two groups of untreated textiles from Peru were used in a project designed to determine the impact of wet cleaning on dry-site cellulosic and camelid textiles. A standard cleaning method, using 3% Orvus detergent, was employed. Visual examination and low magnification photography indicated that the textiles were improved by wet cleaning. Scanning electron microscopic examination revealed that the yarns from washed samples were more compact and that some insoluble embedded dirt remained. Tensile testing, measuring the residual strength of the textile, showed no difference between the washed and unwashed yarns. Evidence is still insufficient that wet cleaning of degraded dry-site archaeological textiles is appropriate.
