Abstract
One aspect of the Mexican law regarding professions has been applied to the profession of art conservation. This law includes the completion of volunteer service, which is one of the requirements that a student must fulfill at the end of his studies in order to present himself for his professional examination. In the studio of the Center for Restoration the first students fulfilled the legal conditions of the law, but did not fulfill the idealistic intention that the law formulated: to do something especially useful for a social group which has the greatest need for the information relative to the specialty. During recent years, this service has successfully followed the spirit of the law, and the result has been, besides the fact that it was advantageous for a specific group, a better understanding on the part of the students of the real goal of their career: the conservation of the cultural patrimony of man, leaving aside their own individual interests or economic gain. The service is done during vacations, so the result is advantageous for the education of the students, awakening their sense of responsibility and service.
