A method of computation has been developed to find the temperature of the onset of rapid thermal degradation of polymers. Calculations are based on data relating to the structure of repeating units of polymers or of their end groups. The role of chemical bonds and of intermolecular interaction in the thermal stability of polymers is revealed, and the influence of various atoms and groups of atoms on thermal stability has been quantitatively evaluated. -- AATA
