Abstract
The distribution and trade of marble in classical times, and the trade of finished, semi-finished pieces, or blocks for further work are described. The different techniques used for the identification of marbles are discussed: macroscopic and microscopic examination, trace analysis, isotopes of carbon or oxygen, manganese ion evaluation by electronic spin resonance. The archaeological interpretation of the analytical data obtained is emphasized.
