Resins present in numerous Syro-Palestinian amphorae recovered from this wreck were shown by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to be from a <i>Pistacia</i> species, almost certainly <i>P. atlantica</i> Desf., the terebinth tree. The triterpenoid composition of the samples was little changed from that of fresh samples of this resin, which in recent centuries has been known as Chios turpentine.
