A palynological survey of the Kofun period sediments at archaeological sites was carried out to study the ancient vegetation of the eastern Nara basin. The basin was originally covered with such taxa as <i>Quercus</i> subgenus. During the Kofun period, the natural vegetation had been influenced by human activities, e.g. constructions of tumuli and land developments.
