Abstract
Ceramic petrographers have procured much of their current methodology from sand/siltstone petrography. Thus attention is focused, almost entirely, upon the characteristics of aplastic grains in ceramic fabrics. Most ceramic fabrics contain about 60-70% or more plastic or fired clay material and are better regarded as mudstones. Methods suited to the study of plastic material need to be introduced to attain comprehensive analyses of ceramic thin sections. It is proposed that the current methodology be integrated with techniques of soil micromorphology. The latter place emphasis upon the plastic components within a thin section, their nature, spatial distribution, and relationships. This integration of descriptive systems provides a broader vocabulary for recording features observed in ceramic thin sections and aids the study of ceramic fabrics as manmade materials rather than sedimentary rocks. A microcomputer program, written for use within the proposed system of thin section description, enables composition histograms to be generated from grain-size and modal analysis data. These histograms make possible the concise and comprehensive presentation of petrographic information relating to aplastic inclusions within a ceramic fabric.
