The excavation of a rich Iron Age cemetery at Knossos has provided numerous examples of nearly all known, and some problematic, pottery styles of the period. Atomic absorption spectrometry is being used to analyze some of the pottery to help better define the trading contacts between Crete and the rest of the Mediterranean during this little known period. At the same time, it is hoped to confirm and/or establish a fabric and stylistic typology for the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean during the so-called Dark Age. A progress report is presented.
