Of the 210 presentations given, 64 dealt with underwater archaeological issues and current research. This volume of the Underwater Archaeology Proceedings includes 36 of those presentations. Recently, the controversy over treasure hunting, salvage, and ethics reached a crescendo. There were strong feelings about ethics and professional looting. Reports on a symposium on critical chaos theory and underwater archaeology. The need for questioning theoretical assumptions and evaluation of data from underwater sites was stressed and examples of how this innovative approach to archaeology could be applied to submerged sites was presented. Other presentations span the 13th century through the 20th century and address such diverse topics as the US Navy involvement in underwater archaeology, state programs, and international underwater archaeological research.
