Abstract
Results are presented of thin section studies and chemical analysis of ceramic materials used in bronze casting. Samples are from the debris of 5th-century BC workshops in Olympia and Athens and from cores of large bronzes from Riace, Piraeus, and Cythera. New information was obtained on the process of bronze melting in large crucibles and on the possibilities of determining the provenances of hollow-cast bronze objects.
