Documentary and field evidence is presented from sites in Cheshire and Yorkshire for flue-walls which protected fruit blossom from frost and helped force the fruit on. At this time there were experiments with crinkle-crankle walls or zigzags for similar reasons. Flue walls were abandoned when late Georgian-early Victorian times brought in greater use of glass and piped heating. One survives in Lancashire, another in Essex.
