Shell beads may be made of all or part of a shell. The required perforation may be from natural cell growth, from external natural forces, or part of the manufacture of the bead. In order to differentiate between natural and artificial perforation, seven different methods of perforating shell were tested for their ease, efficiency, effects on tools, and end results. The Japanese <i>heishi</i> technique is also described.
