Some of the questions and answers following the conservation sessions at the A.A.M. Regional Conferences held in the fall of 1970 were selected and edited by Edward P. Lawson. The panel members were James B. Roth, Resident Consevator of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City, Mrs. Marilyn Kemp Weidner, a consultant for the Museum of Modern art, New York, and Lawrence J. Majewski, Chairman of the Conservation Center, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Simple rules of preventive maintenance until the services of a qualified conservator are secured include protecting fragile paintings by proper facings, recognizing danger signals, checking the security of the mounting, framing and storing methods, assuring safe packing and shipping methods. Criteria for works of art on paper include protection from the effects of light, from backings which have a wood pulp center, the use of glass, Plexiglas and other protective coverings. Questions of the proper temperature and humidity for paintings, paper and wood were also discussed.
