Abstract
Experimental stone-carving shows the steps used by a medieval carver to turn a raw block into a finished capital. A method of analysis based on the actual carving process was shown to be consistently applicable and offers a new approach, reducing superficial differences to a smaller, manageable number of objectively comparable elements.
